I filed a bug <rdar://4097772> which describes a problem where
'fi' will show up as a combined ligature in plain text e-mails and
documents.
For example, in TextEdit, set your Format in the prefs to Plain Text.
Make a new document and type in words that begin with 'fi' (e.g.
file). Notice that once you type the 'i', it will combine with
the 'f'.
Anyone else seeing this?
Also, I am _not_ seeing this issue at all with NSTextFields; seems
to be isolated to Mail.app and TextEdit.app.
Thanks to an off-list tip that I may be using a different font than
others, I tracked the problem down to having two sets of Courier
and Monaco in my Font Book. Specifically, I saw two entries for
Regular and two for Bold. Deleting one of them removed the
problem; I was able to view all my mail messages as they should be
(i.e. 'f' and 'i' never combined anymore).
Mail.app was using Courier and TextEdit.app was using Monaco.
Also seeing duplicates in about a dozen other fonts in my Font Book
(e.g. Osaka, Times, Tribune). Don't know what may have caused
this, but it could be related to doing an upgrade install vs. a
clean one.
