Getting the current cursor (globally)

Is there a way in Cocoa to get a reference to the current cursor, not on an application basis (which is simply via [NSCursor currentCursor]), but for the OS as a whole?
My application is tracking the mouse and creating a video with the mouse cursor, but it does this in the background. I'd like to be able to detect when the user hovers over any UI element that results in a cursor change, and switch the image that I'm using in the video appropriately.

I realise that some cursors may be custom images. For now, I'm only interested in the standard cursors....
