John, thanks for the thought. I actually believe I started out using your code, but switched. I confirmed that moving the windowNib to the windowcontroller doesn't change the message.
Interestingly (to me), the -awakefromnib isn't called during the initialization makeWindowControllers path, it's called from the "-showWIndow" path, and the 2nd controller's "awakeFromNib" is called BEFORE the makeWindowControllers is.
