File's Owner in IB

I am trying to learn to use Cocoa, and of course I have some frustration.
Right now I am doing the example in "Building Cocoa Applications" by
Garfinkle and Mahoney. I go to page 203, step 35. It says

35. Inform IB that the File's Owner in AboutPanel.nib will be of the
Controller class. Do this by clicking the File's Owner's icon in the
AboutPanel.nib window and then selecting Controller in the File's Owner
Info dialog, as shown in Figure 6-16.

I can do all that and then in the inspector window for File's Owner
attributes, I see a message "Not Applicable" instead of the list of
classes that appears in Figure 6-16 in the book, and I have not been
able to find any way around this. I have actually gotten to the same
point in a couple of other programs with the same result--I am stuck.

The book is based on OS 10.2 abd dated 2002. I am using 10.4.6. I
am using XCode 2.2.1. I guess the book uses an earlier version. I
guess that is the problem, but what should I do? I would be very
grateful for any help. --Wes
