Actually, Xcode does not do it. it uses command line utility "lipo". So theoretically, it is possible to build universal binaries with any IDE (including Eclipse). The only question is : why bother?

That isn't entirely true. There is nothing preventing a third party from building universal binaries using whatever build system they so desire. For example, Python 2.4 is builds as a universal binary.


With that said, Xcode is the only supported way of doing so as it is the only tool that has the officially blessed special sauce for building universal apps.
