Are you sure you are only updating on the main thread?

Why the use of @synchronized in the above if updates only take place
on the main thread?

I think I found a solution. Moved the allocation of the new items to the main thread and used allocWithZone:, instead of alloc, avoiding the NSAutoReleasePool from the secondary thread. Solved a brief UI freeze while updating the list too.
