How about "retained" and "unretained"? As in: "this method returns an

How about "dependent" and "independent".
It it's dependent, they you have a responsibility for it, maybe many
times over. If it is independent, then you don't.
This also talks in terms of the relationship, not the means to
establishing that relationship.
