Re: Best gamut ink for fine art giclee

O.K. Has anyone run any Dmax tests for blacks of the UltraChrome inks on matte and art papers? I measure a D1.84 for the black value of the 1270, 1280, 7000 dye ink set on Epson Heavyweight Matte (and a D2.21 for the glossy, but who cares), but I have never seen any figures published for the UC pigment inks. Anyone?

We use an epson 9600 with UC inks and ImagePrint Rip for fine art printing - this we found is the absolute best combination.
I'm seldom disappointed anymore after the image is ink on paper.
We print on  Hahnemuhle PhotoRag, but are beta testing a new paper that receives the inks even better....
You do need a rip to get the best out of the printer and it beats the 1280 and all other printers
(yes, we've tested all that would apply to fine art printing, except the Mimaki, which looks promising).
I find the dye inks visually too psychedelic...
You cannot call it "fine art prints" unless they last at least more than 50-75 years.
I guess some people use this term to distinguish from 4/c reproduction proofing, but "fine art" definitely has to have an element of lasting quality.
Our customers for prints are collectors and major museums.
For advertising I deliver a "guidance print" that is as close to a SWOP proof that i can manage.

for speed and convenience (larger print head and paper trays).  But after lots of testing, the UC inks just
don't have the "oomph" of the dyes.  If you use the UC inks, go thru Photoshop and try maxing out the ink
levels.  This will give you the best saturation in blacks and darks.
