Technically this is not at all hard. One issue is that
providing calibration matrices is an n x m combinatorial problem,
ie. a matrix is needed for each combination of display and colorimeter.
That makes it awkward to create and distribute such calibrations
(ignoring the lack of an agreed standard file format).
Conceptually a display manufacturer could distribute
a file containing the matrices for each type of colorimeter
out there, for their particular display, but the
makes and models of colorimeters will change over time,
and what do you do if the display manufacturer has overlooked
your colorimeter ?
A way of turning the the n x m problem into an n + m problem
would be for the colorimeter manufacturers to provide spectral
sensitivity curves for their devices, and the display manufacturers
to provide spectral output for their displays, allowing the
appropriate correction matrix to be computed. I doubt this
is going to happen though, mainly due to the fear of giving
away "proprietary device information", and (again) the
lack of an agreed standard file format for distributing
such information.
My final thought is that perhaps the most practical approach is to
provide a software tool that creates a correction matrix for a particular
colorimeter/display combination using something like an Eye-One Pro as the
reference. This would at least work within a particular vendors
software toolset, and the correction matrices could be distributed
by anyone wanting to provide such a service.
