It's about having an option to have a window into the actual values in the
file itself.
Remember that in 8-bit RGB files there is no real issue with decimal values,
since the values are shown in a 0-255 scale anyway. It's with 8-bit CMYK and
Grayscale files that one would like to see the decimals, all the more so
because Photoshop uses them internally, as it must because of the inherent
discrepancy between 8-bit math and the 0-100 scales used in CMYK and
Grayscale modes.
On the other hand, access to decimal precision would also be a desirable
feature both in *viewing* and in *modifying* 16-bit RGB files, since in 16
bits we are currently limited to viewing their values either in 0-255
integer notation or in 15-bit level notation (0-32767, which I find very
non-intuitive and not very useful for me).
Decimal precision is not "chimerical", in my opinion (those are *real*
values -- how would that be a "chimera"?), and it certainly deceives no one,
though it may *confuse* someone who doesn't understand it.
If one wants a way to tap into decimal precision for 8-bit CMYK and
Grayscale files (and also for the L* channel in 8-bit L*a*b*!) as well as
16-bit RGB files in 0-255 notation, I think it should be available as an
option.
