Re: tools for building device links (was "Proper Gamut Mapping")

Matt,

DevcieLink Profiles (DVLPs) exist since color management exists ie in early nineties (I was not in this field before).
Proofing, imaging and printing systems vendors like Agfa, GMG, KODAK and Scitex had products that served their solutions. These solutions were all proprietary as no standard for color management existed at that time.
When ICC specification and profiles became robust, popular and admitted as industry standard in the mid nineteens (version 2.0+), new ICC DVLP creation tools appeared with mainly Alwan Color Expertise (LinkProfiler) and Left Dakota (Link-O-Later).
All major vendors except GMG followed the trend and proposed with the years their ICC DVLP solution: Agfa (ColorTune), CGS (Oris ColorTuner), Gretag (ProfileMakerPro), KODAK (ColorFlow), Monaco (Profiler) and others maybe that I am not aware of.
In 2004 many soutions were available on the market.
For this reason, PCM (Progresive Color Media) a former division of Flint Ink did a benchmark of available ICC DeviceLink Profiling tools that was presented at GATF Color Management Conference December 2004.
This benchmark report is still available on our web site below.

Since then, other tools appeared on the market like ColorLogic CoLiPri and recently BasiCColor DeviL.
Other DVLP based technologies appeared too , Alwan has developped a new technology, Dynamic DeviceLink Profiles, which is available in one of their products, CMYK Optimizer.
If you are interested by knowing more about this technology, a scientific and technical report comparing static (conventional) and dynamic DVLPs done by the French Print Engineering School (EFPG) is also available on Alwan web site.

I hope that this does not sound commercial as my main intention was to give you and other readers who are interested by DVLPs, a comprehensive panorama of the available tools that I am aware of.

Kind Regards,

What tools out there offer the ability to build very high quality device link profiles? What are people using?

Link-o-lator, Argyll CMS, are there others that have widespread use?

It needn't be better, but it offers the scope to be better if gamut
mapping is postponed to the point at which the profiles are linked.
