advice is spot on. A grayscale will do just fine for publication
magazines. There is no real need to introduce the CMY inks if all
you're printing is a B&W image unless you can't live without that
extra boost in density. Sure, the proof has be SWOP standard, but
the images can be a 20% or 22% grayscale and would be perfectly
valid for SWOP specs.
However, if the images are mostly neutral but have some color
elements in the pictures, you may want to take Terence Wyse's
advice and experiment with extreme K separations.
We use an extreme K separation profile for publication printing of
4C neutral images and the idea is very similar to Terence Wyse.
However, I set the black start point very early in the separation
and then aggressively curve the black upwards in the midtones using
a Heavy GCR setting. The result of the separation should be nearly
identical to Richard Booth's method but far less labor intensive.
We have had excellent results with this profile for two years running.
