I use a Minolta Dimage multipro to scan 6x6 b&w negatives. I always use Fuji Acros film. I profiled the scanner with a Fuji color slide and convert to that profile after I scan. I always scan the negative as if it were a color positive in 16 bit rgb color at the highest possible dpi without interpolation (3600 dpi for 6x6). The only adjustments that I use in the scanner software are to stop clipping--amount of light adjusted. Then when I get into photoshop I convert to a positive, assign the Fuji profile, then start doing my standard adjustments which include desaturing 100%, curves, etc. The file sizes are large (starting at about 280 megabytes). More data is better--you can always throw data away but you cannot adequately recreate it. I get great density ranges using this system.
