Hi Rich.

I think I know just what you are talking about.

This "secret handshake" problem was certainly a frequent occurrence in the
early days of color-managed workflows, when manufacturers were themselves
very confused about the whole issue of color-managed workflows and how to
implement them, and placed crucial features in what I thought were highly
unintuitive places inside the software.

DuPont's Cromalin Color Station and the early incarnations of Best
Colorproof caused me quite a bit of hassle, forcing me to ask countless
questions of the technical support teams over the phone, which were not
always forthcoming -- which in turn meant I had to spend considerable
amounts of time experimenting. It was a lot of work to get it right.
