HP 6100ps, embedded spectro, advanced profiling

Hi Jeff,

I have a HPZ6100PS and have also installed a non-PS version for a customer. Here's some feedback from "the street."

Anyone have any experience with the HP Z6100ps printer? It has a built-in
spectro and advertises like magic.

The embedded Spectro is an Eye-One, great device.

It seems you need the Advanced Profiling
package in order to edit profiles or to build an RGB profile (not sure why
I'd want to), so if anyone has any experience with that, I'd love to hear
your story.

If you're not using a third party RIP then yes, you need the profiling package. Just be aware that it only creates RGB profiles. This is a bit of a drawback to using a better third party RIP that can create profiles using the actual ink color channels, however, it does an OK job and is very easy to use.

Choose your media carefully since the Vivera inks only look good on the right media. I use the HP Premium Instant Dry Photo papers and the results are very good for maximum color gamut and density. I experimented with some third party papers and the results were disappointing to very good. You don't necessarily have to use the HP paper, but it is easier out of the gate (and more expensive).

I'm advising on purchase for this machine and need to hear the
word on the street. Thanks!

The word is favorable. The speed is fantastic, mainly due to the doubling up on the print heads. The quality is very good once you settle on your media and make decent profiles. All in all, a great production printer.

NOTE: If using this printer with a Mac and/or third party RIP be sure to go into the Web Access and turn off Queue printing and set to print Immediately. I also highly recommend the RAM upgrade if you're sending large files.
