I'm not an under-the-hood expert on the subject, but I would think that,
whatever the route to the printheads, a well-designed software RIP will
attempt to make use of the widest range possible of the device's
capabilities, and that, if it winds up limiting them instead, then one would
do well to use some other software that proves to be better-behaved.

But perhaps there are inherent reasons why this cannot be so?

I have to admit that I have not profiled any inkjet device via both the
normal driver *and* a software RIP (it's always been one way or the other).
That would be a good test of this contention that the two routes produce
significantly different gamuts. Has anyone tried that?
