Yup, that's where a Spectrophotometer is far from ideal as a tool for
display calibration. If as you say, you're less concerned with the accuracy
of the white calibration, go with a Colorimeter. And they only have 'issues'
(not that huge) with wide gamut displays or displays where the filters are a
poor match. 

Currently I use the Spectrophotometer to build a custom white target in
SpectraView, the use an OPTIX for the rest of the process. Best of both
worlds on this wide gamut unit. But of course, not everyone has access to
both devices.
