It's surely true that the final judgement for a monitor _must_ be
visual. I also don't buy a stereo component solely looking by the
specs!

But I think the technical data _can_ be really interesting and
helpful -- but that's mainly for the manufacturer. In the end the
visual appearance counts.

When judging a display one must be _very_ aware of the conditions and
if you compare to a print you're judging a system (proof print,
viewing booth, application and softproof settings, monitor
calibration...). How the system works is of course also very
important, but one must be very careful to make a decision about one
component when the test does not really separate them.

Also looking at one picture might be misleading. Using several
different test pictures _and_ artificial test pictures like gray ramps
will be helpful.
