Oh, let's say I wanted to play audio out to multiple rooms using
different
instances of 'standard' apps (like VLC) with a single audio device
(for
example the Oxford Firewire-based chipset (OXFW971)).
Maybe there's a lot smarter way to do this w/ this kind of chipset.

what apps are not dealing with 8 channel devices - that is a
problem
with those apps...

I was trying to see if I could 'break up' an existing 8 channel
device in to
4 completely independent stereo 'devices'. Is there any way to do
this such
that the device appears as 4 'devices' that can be used
independently?
