Actually I did not want to bore anyone here with off-topic details, all details had been posted on darwin-drivers already.

Meanwhile the problem has been solved - apparently gdb can not inspect mapped memory from a PCI card, and that got us desperate because we were looking in all the wrong places. I will post a full resolution to darwin-drivers soon, so that others may save some grief.
