Having said all that, I found that there is a bug (fixed in 10.4.5)
which was reported in MySQL <http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=13084>
which may be relevant. Try upgrading to 10.4.5 and see if the problem
goes away. The Apple bug number was 4280976.
