Sorry, missed it by one bit, thought it was 0x7f :-) 0x7e I think is from bash, if it fails to launch an app/script..

That's what system() returns if it fails to execl() "/bin/sh" after fork()-ing, unfortunately it's not in the man page.
But I don't see how that could be caused by just not having root privileges.
