Well, that's wrong then. A Backup /must be/ identical to the source in every possible respect otherwise it can not be used to properly restore said file to it's original state.


I can see reasons for both ways.

cp, tar, and friends would "create" a copy (a different creation date)

To preserve creation date, one would use a filesystem dump(8)/restore (8) utility.

I see that Mac OS X has dump/restore from FreeBSD. I have not yet used this facility for HFS+ volumes. Does it preserve the all the attributes/metadata/whatever? Creation times?
