How can one get the current working directory from a syscall (of the process in the syscall)? I can get the vnode of the directory, but I'd like to have a path.

No, at least not in current releases of Darwin. The code to get the cwd is in Libc(aka Libsystem)/gen/getcwd.c. As an aside: keep in mind that using syscalls directly from your application is not supported.
