AD X86 ver 8.0.0 - We a seeking suggestions for the most usable GUI Desktop - Windows Manager

Hi Good Forum Folks,
Well we're somewhat boyed by our one small success with great advice from several Forum Members who finally aided us with getting our bleedin' CDRom/DVD Combo "finally" up and running, what should have been an auto configure by an intelligent os hardware probe where Apple Darwin was concerned, aparently was available or failed. That lack of intellegence on darwqin's part, finall meant 2 days of trawling the internet with no success for a workable answer.

Unfortunately these day many equate time to money. We'd be bankrupt under this roof several week ago. "If" we had to work that way.

We see a lot of this "finally" thingy in forums about our Darwin. It's nigh on a route march and you need a semi-trailer load of cut lunches of patience, before some small glimmers of success appear.

It goes with the Territory, as well as lack of sleep, dirty mounting coffee cups, overflowin' ash trays, and blood shot, strained eyes, and finally falling asleep, to sleep like the dead. Often with no visable forward progress made to the day you can actually claim "I do have a woring, operational, usable Operating System."

That said, we move on to the "next" drama. Nothing new,,,, just another dog of a Darwin Day !

THE CORE OF OUR POST.

This quaint text thingie "they" call an interface has worn out it's welcome long ago ...period !!!!

Ok, can anyone advise us of exactly "which", GUI(s) base(s) to work from that will provide us with, "too the max",,,, utility's, tools, functionality, gui ppp, etc. etc. aka a ready to rock and roll Linux like Desktop,,,, that's reall "IS" fully functioning, and totally shield's us from "that" cryptic, tireing, confusing, and drop dead fread old retro command prompt ????

BUT...... still offers us a GUI Console ONLY IF "REALLY" NEEDED !

Because as far as we are aware we who are the other box users ...

aka. x86 Hardware users arent't to be given an Aqua Like equivelant by Mr. and Mrs Apple Mac.

Questions.

Going to xfree86 and or x.org for X11 and gaining the latest .rpm's or tarballs of their sources ...

they "won't install on Apple Darwin version 8.0.0 ? ????? ......
Without being specially altered for x86 Hardware and Darwin,,,,

is that our fate????

                      ***********************

In other words is it the case that it's DarwinPorts or nothing ! ????

                      ***********************

IF SO ...... is there some form of automated scripts that are to do a best guess, with user over ride and or editing, to get your ppp dial in, configured , Serial Port configured, Modem configured, etc. etc.
IF SO..... where can we obtain them .... the DarwinPorts Site.

Would it be possible to use a non Darwin OS box(PC) to pull the required tarballs / RPM's down onto it's hdd,,, and then burn a cdrom or dvd rewriteable with the required GUI software on it.

Then pull it into the AppleDarwin OS box and unarchive or using rpm -i install the programs. To save the hell,,,, of text based setups from a "sort of" working Apple Darwin System ?

I have to honestly admit anything we've googled by way of other forums that aren't run by Apple Open Darwin, GNUDarwin have left a rather noticable icy freeze under our roof, as far as confidence is concerned. Particularly in regards other users woe's, weepings and whailings are concerned, involing getting Apple Darwin Internet bound, and headed in the right direction.

Remember we are running X86 Apple Darwin Version 8.0

Any advice and help would be appreciated.

                                            cheers to all
                                            kelly.
