use of the " : " in the /etc/profile (text file) PATH statement on x86 AD v8.0

Hi,
   First time we have come across " : " in a PATH statement, in our case in our groups Apple Darwin v8.0's profile (a text file) edited with pico (at present). That is up until we get our successful build of X11 (latest ver) then our future latest builds of Gnome and KDE all up and working correctly. Then we'll use a Graphical Editor.

1.) Does the colon also called the programmers full stop / computer full stop signal the end to searching directories/folder below the place it is put for example....

PATH ="/bin/usr/sbin:/usr/etc:/var"

OR

2.) Is the " : " used to stop the os and or installed software from reaching into deeply nested sub directories. aka /usr/sbin >>>>and deeper nested subs ????

aka everything that are sub folders of sbin and again any sub folders of sub folders.

OR

Is the " : " colon computer full stop used to give the searching engine the green light to go for broke and search everything under the prior directory structure directly behind the ":" through to the end going into for example and sub directories of /usr/bin

As far as I am personally aware we "don't" have this option in any linux flavours of distro's path statements. Don't know about BSD Distro flavours. But Apple Darwin "is" a hibrid BSD, and may not be "Fully" BSD Compliant.

Thanks for any help in advance.
                                  regards,
                                  kelly and group.
