Darwin doesn't have "gawk" (GNU-awk) but "awk", so replacing every occurence of "gawk" with "awk" in the Makefile might work.

Easier & simpler to "ln -s /usr/bin/awk /usr/local/bin/gawk". If that doesn't work, you should probably get and try to build <http://www.fsf.org/software/gawk/gawk.html>.
