can't compile postfix and qpopper

when I try to "make" postfix the compiler exits with
gawk -f extract.awk ../*/*.c
zsh: command not found: gawk
make: *** [time_vars.h] Error 1
make: *** [update] Error 1
make: *** [update] Error 2

qpopper seems to "make" fine but "make install" exits with "install does not need updating"

has anyone had any luck getting these to work under darwin/osx?

can anyone give me step by step instructions as I am a *nix newbee
