I've got XDarwin running using XAqua, and it works fine with twm,

I haven't tried running Gnome, but I can give you a few general suggestions. If you are having problems with XDarwin not starting things in your .xinitrc file correctly, you can look at the error messages in the the console with the Console application in /Applications/Utilities. Or you can use "startx -- -quartz" and start from the Terminal window to see these messages. Look after the initial XFree86 startup message and you will see errors encountered when trying to start the X clients. If the X clients fail to start you will often get a second XFree86 startup message followed by an error message about failing to initialize the core keyboard. Ignore this message, the real problem is whatever caused your X clients to fail to launch.

I get a lot of "Gdk-warning: Locale not
supported by C Library" messages.

You'll also get this warning from xterms. The warning means what it says: the C library doesn't support locale functions and the program is continuing without locale support.
