User database - what mechanism to use

Hello all,

I'm trying to put some 20000 users in netinfo with niload.

Apart from that it takes hours to import them, the netinfod process
grows pretty large (45M), lookups are really slow - tens of seconds,
and worse, the netinfo database several times has got corrupted on
netinfod restart.

I have been playing with putting them in /etc/master.passwd and
have lookupd use flat file, but since the flat file reader seems
to do a seqential search the lookup time gets really long.

As far as I can tell, the flat file reader will not use a passwd
database build with pwd_mkdb. Is thas correct? Is anyone working
on this?

I have also had the impression that one could get lookupd to look
directly in the netinfo databases without using a netinfod. Does
anyone know anything about this? I might have misunderstood
something.

Is anyone else out there using Mac OS X or Darwin with this number
of users with some local means to store the user database and with
some kind of success? I'd be very interrested to hear what/how you
did that.

Thanks!
