RAM disk for OS X

I would like to mount a RAM disk on my OS X ibook. I've read that BSD has
something called a memory file system which can be mounted if there is an
mfs entry in an fstab file. But I've also read in the darwin FAQ that darwin
doesn't use /etc/fstab. Can anyone tell me how to create RAM disk? What are
/etc/fstab.hd, /etc/fstab.rd and /etc/fstab.sd used for?

Also, I see that the fstab.?d files refer to an mfs volume mounted at /tmp.
But the command df /tmp returns results that look like /tmp is part of the /
file system and is not separate. So what is the /tmp entry in fstab.?d for?

Thanks
David
