Although updating to Mac OS X 10.1.x is a very good idea, you don't actually need 10.1.x to run XFree86. The XonX project only distributes a GUI installer for 10.1.x due to issues with the installer we are using, but you can install XFree86 using the standard platform independent, command line Xinstall.sh script. Instructions are at http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.0/Install.html. Fink and others also have installers.

than i try to install darwin 1.4.1 from developer.apple.com site, no
problem. but i can't start xfree via startx, i read i don't need to
change XF86Config. if i typ startx the laptop freeze and i can only
reset the computer to get the control back.

Actually you probably have control back and don't realize it. Just type "exit" and you should be returned to the login prompt. XFree86 does not properly return the display to the console when it quits. This makes it harder to diagnose what your problem is. Generally if you use "startx >& startx.log" the log file should tell you what is going wrong. Post the log file to XonX-Users list for more help if you need it. (See http://sourceforge.net/projects/xonx.)
