hello,
i am a newbie, i buy last week a new ibook with 600 mhz. i am a linux user and after reading mac os x based on bsd i decide to buy my first mac. but the laptop is delivered with mac os 10.0.3 i read i need 10.1.x to run XFree. so my first question:

1. where can i download mac os 10.1.x ?

The Mac OS X system you have has an application called System Preferences. Launch that, and select the Software Update icon. This will let you update from Apple.com to later versions of the system. You will have to do this several times to assure that the system is in a stable state, at the proper level. When Software Update completes, it will either ask you to reboot/restart, or allow you to quit.

Once you have either restarted or quit, run this System Preference again. When you reach a point where the Software Update operation produces no updates, you are done. Currently, that is 10.1.4. There are several interim updates between Mac OS X updates that have to do with a new installer, security fixes, etc. All of these should be taken as well.

than i try to install darwin 1.4.1 from developer.apple.com site, no problem. but i can't start xfree via startx, i read i don't need to change XF86Config. if i typ startx the laptop freeze and i can only reset the computer to get the control back.

Don't know about this one; you'll have to check with XonX team (check the archives).

Regards,

Justin
