bug in FTP?

This is really weird. There is some kind of transient problem with
/usr/bin/ftp on my OS X system. Sometimes when I try to upload a file
to a host, the transaction aborts with the mysterious message:

'': command not understood

Here's a more complete transcript of a failed FTP session:

> ftp foo.com
Connected to foo.com.
220 foo.com FTP server (Version 6.00LS) ready.
Name (foo.com:bar):
331 Password required for bar.
Password:
230 User bar logged in.
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.
ftp> put bookinfo
local: bookinfo remote: bookinfo
200 PORT command successful.
500 '': command not understood.
ftp> bye
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for 'bookinfo'.

Anyone have an idea what's going on here?
