Panther pppd breaks my pptp setup

I have been using pppd from the command line to connect to my office LAN via a Nortel Contivity router (over which I have no control). I have an options and a peers file and an ip-up script to permit me to keep my defaultroute. This all worked fine under Jaguar through 10.2.8. Under Panther, it does not. I've waded through man pppd, fixed the options that have changed (like forcedetach), and still, it fails. Walking through the logs from Jaguar and Panther, I can see CHAP succeeding:
Remote message: CHAP authentication success, unit 55807032

I see IPX rejected for both:
Unsupported protocol 'Novell IPX Control Protocol' (0x802b) received
sent [LCP ProtRej id=0x3 80 2b 01 6e 00 24 01 06 12 34 56 78 02 08 66 55 44 33 22 11 04 04 00 00 05 0c 63 6f 6e 74 69 76 ...]

After this, the conversation diverges:

I have played with all of the options documented in the man page, and have even looked through the source code for insight. I've seen posts of similar problems in the Darwin lists, and in MacOSXHints, but no solutions. I'm willing to test more if need be - I have both Jaguar and Panther machines here and Panther and RH Linux machines in my office.

Thanks in advance,
