As for resolv.conf, note that it typically gets overwritten by the DHCP
client, and also by VPN software.
You can do more sophisticated configuration by creating an /etc/resolver
directory. If the name of the file matches the domain suffix (eg
example.com) then that conf file will be used in place of resolv.conf for
that lookup (only).
This becomes useful when you are running dual-access via normal connection
and a VPN, and you need to direct VPN DNS requests to the VPN's resolvers.
Make sure you cover both normal and reverse lookups. I usually just
symlink the reverse lookup paths to the primary one, since the resolver
information is the same in both directions.
