JPEG decoder on OSX?

I am using a JPEG decoder package that is part Sun's JDK
(com.sun.image.code.jpeg.*), but when the code is run under OS X, the
decoder doesn't seem to work that well, if at all. Unfortunately, I don't
get any exceptions.

Has anyone been able to utilize the JPEG decoder in Java2D? I am loading
the images via the classloader rather than the ImageProducer/Consumer route.
I am NOT loading from a jar file but rather the directory itself.
