It's simply that not everyone is going to look at or notice differences in
icons. I typically roll the mouse over the Dock items and read the
roll-over names. When the icons are small and magnification is off or low,
it's the names where one can see the difference. While magnification may
look cool in demos, I find it seriously disorienting in regular use. The
names, however, are always there, never shrink or magnify like something
from a bad acid trip, and still benefit from the muscle memory effect of
position in the Dock.

I was all set to rename "/Developer/Applications" to be "/Developer/Tools"
but there's already a folder with that name. It's not at all clear what
the difference is, except that the contents of "Tools" seem to be
"documents" for an unknown app, and have more gibberish in some of the
names, in the rlntlsly sqshd frm blvd f gky prgmrs.
