RE: Raising bug reports

I agree with Rolf that developing proper bug reports is time-consuming.
However, the alternative is worse--apple engineers spending a lot of time
chasing down bugs that are really user mistakes. Over the years I have
filed bug reports on MRJ and other non-apple products, and I have come to
believe that the process of defining the bug, writing a test case, and
generating sample code actually helps me, as often I find that what I
thought was a bug was really my mistake after all. I would say that only 1
out of 5 issues I really "wrote up" were actual bugs.

Those that were bugs and were submitted with all the supporting work got
prompt attention from the MRJ team. It helped them quickly narrow down what
exactly was going wrong, and I saw a few of my bugs fixed in MRJ.

The best part was, I knew when they were fixed, because I would run my test
code against beta versions and release versions and could see when something
was not only fixed, but fixed the way I expected it to be fixed.
