I highly recommend Kim Topley's _Core Swing Advanced Programming_:

(You can browse the table of contents and an excerpt on creating customized

It's well-written and uses an "explain-by-example" approach to the Swing
text API that helped me immensely in writing my own custom editor. Don't let
the occasional bad review fool you: they appear to originate from folks who
missed the "Advanced" in the book's title (in fact, one of the one-star
reviews is "Should be titled: how to write an editor using swing").
