No message appear on the Console. I'll file a bug report since we can make
this happen fairly often.

Still open to suggestions for causes or workarounds.

Have you tried running sample or attaching with gdb when Perfboard is hung? It's definitely helpful to include backtraces from those with bug reports like this one. It'd also be nice to determine if the JVM has been launched and if the Carbon event loop has started.
