Re: Jaguar and 1.4 availability.

I certainly wasn't counting on any updates to 10.1--I'm aware as anyone on this list of the Jaguar ship date. I was, however, hoping that Apple would make available a higher quality version of their 1.3 JVM for the millions of early adopters of Mac OS X--all of us currently running 10.1.X. The current version of the JVM is barely useable for my applications and I hate telling Mac users they have to spend $129 to get a useable JVM when it's free on other platforms. I have no doubt that $129 is a fair price for such a major upgrade as 10.2 (I bought it) but there will NOT be universal adoption of Jaguar on August 24th. Historically, a very large percentage of the installed base of any OS is running antiquated versions. That hasn't stopped Sun from supporting JDK 1.4 on Microsoft operating systems back to NT, 98 and possibly 95--those versions are years old not months old like 10.1.5. I do understand that Apple's effort has been focused on 1.4 and that it uses Jaguar-specific features of 10.2 but why can't a *useable* 1.3 JVM be made available to the current Mac OS X installed base until 1.4 ships?

I wouldn't count on any updates to 10.1. As of this Friday at 10:20, 10.2 is *the* official version of the system. Once that happens, all 10.1.* versions are history.
