com.apple.hwaccelnogrowbox=true

I'm setting com.apple.hwaccelnogrowbox=true in myApp.app/Contents/Resources/MRJApp.properties, but growboxes appear in my AWT Frames regardless of whether com.apple.hwaccel is set to true or false (see JavaWhatsNew.pdf for 10.2). As far as I can tell, hwaccel is being successfully turned off and on from the same properties file (judging by different behavior of TextArea, whose scrolling is screwed up when hwaccel off, OK when on). What might I be doing wrong in setting com.apple.hwaccelnogrowbox? (TiBook 500 MHz, 10.2)
