Support for <applet> tag left behind in Internet Explorer for Jaguar?

There are some curious statements about running applets in Internet Explorer in
"What's New for Java in Mac OS X Version 10.2":
http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/macosx/Java/pdf/JavaWhatsNew.pdf

"Sun encourages the use of the <applet> tag for all applets" but "the suggested
<applet> tag will only have the desired results in the Mozilla/Netscape"

The document suggests using the <object> tag for Internet Explorer instead of
the Sun-recommended <applet> tag, while using the <applet> or <embed> tag for
Mozilla/Netscape.

The "What's New" document suggests that those keeping to the Sun-recommended
<applet> tags will lose unspecified advantages, possibly losing JAR caching; the
document also says "Jar files in the ARCHIVE parameter are not cached".

Is this some temporary workaround because Microsoft didn't come out with a new
version of Internet Explorer for OS 10.2? Or does it mean we are supposed to
use different tags for applets in different browsers?
