Try switching to digest mode. There are typically 10-15 messages per
digest (20 on a good day), so you get 1/10-1/15 the number of mail-messages
per day. I find it's the only sane way to deal with any mail-list having
this much traffic.

Personally, the thing that drives me nuts is the people who quote 50-100
line messages (often with recursive quoting) adding only a few new lines of
actual content. I attribute this to the annoying practice of automatically
putting quoted material at the end of a message, where it simply builds up
like dust or junk DNA. If I were gonna vote for anything, I'd vote for a
list auto-responder that looked for quoted sig-lines from a previous
message (e.g. the trailer on every list message), and sent a polite message
to the poster: "Less quoting, more content".
