Screen Size Question

What is the proper (cross-platform safe) way to get the *available* screen size for a full-screen window?

The toolkit getScreenSize() method returns the full screen resolution on OS X, whereas the actual available height for a full-screen frame is about 22 pixels less than that, due to the menubar. Do I need to make a JDirect or JNI call if my app is running on a Mac, or is there a simple Java method or system property I can use?
