trouble with appletviewer and Applet Launcher

I'm trying to debug an applet, but I can't get it to run with either appletviewer or Applet Launcher.
When I run it in appletviewer, the java icon appears in the dock for a second and then disappears, and I see no error messages on the command line or in the logs.

~ 30> appletviewer Desktop/ChipPlotter/build/applet.html
~ 31>

When I run it with the debug flag, I see this:

~ 33> appletviewer -debug Desktop/ChipPlotter/build/applet.html
Initializing jdb...
> run
run sun.applet.Main Desktop/ChipPlotter/build/applet.html
>
VM Started:
The application exited
~ 34>

When I try to run it with Applet Launcher, nothing happens with I click "Launch".

However, the applet does run if I open the html page with Mozilla.

My environment is OS X 10.2.2, java version 1.3.1
