Without seeing the code, it's hard to say. Can you create a stripped-down version of the program that shows the problem, but doesn't have anything else? (Likely, it would do nothing more than play each sound.) (I've often found that creating the demo is enough to show me what I'm doing wrong.)

Bruce Eckel's "Thinking in Java" is a good one, and the price is right: free, if you don't care much about paper (http://www.mindview.net/Books/TIJ/).
