IntelliJ Idea problem

I've been using idea build 629 for some time now on several Macs and have grown to rely on it. But sometimes it just dies, and appears to take some files with it. Something like that has happened again, but this time I can't find my way out.

When I start idea, the splash screen comes up and then I get an error:

[ 11415] ERROR - com.intellij.ide.p - Error during dispatching of java.awt.event.InvocationEvent[INVOCATION_DEFAULT,runnable=com.intellij. idea.l@67bbeb,notifier=null,catchExceptions=false] on com.apple.mrj.internal.awt.publicpeers.VToolkit@626bd2
...
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/sun/jdi/request/EventRequest
at java.lang.Class.forName0(Native Method)

which then leads to an enormous stack trace. This needs a force-quit. I can get idea to start by removing all the config files, but it doesn't really work (lots of dispatch errors). It then won't start until the config files are all removed again. A set of config files from another install gives the same error, as does a fresh install of idea (which seems really strange). There doesn't seem to be much consistency here, with regards to which file might be causing the problem.

No other java program seems to have any problem, including idea 2.6, but I still seem to think something is pooched in my JDK or JRE somewhere.

I have installed 1.4.1 DP4, followed by DP5, where there is no problem starting IDEA 3.0, except that the JRE is still not good enough to use for more than a few minutes. I don't know if this is related.

I've also reinstalled DevTools, to no avail.

So bottom line, I need to get 629 up and running in a usable form, and I'm not sure what else to do other than reinstall the whole system, which really doesn't seem necessary. How can you just reinstall the JRE/JDK? Or is there something else I can try before a whole system install?

Thanks,

J
