Speech, JSAPI, etc.

I'm in the early stages of planning the development of an application that
will use speech synthesis (output). The application is targeted for both
Windows and Mac OS X.

I'm roughly aware of JSAPI and also the Java Speech Framework Apple has
posted. I think there is a JSAPI package that will work on both platforms
but I'm not sure of the quality and CPU load it requires. And I imagine
Apple's package is Mac-only.

If anyone has some experience or advice with targeting speech output on
those two platforms, I would appreciate your hearing your experiences or
recommendations.
